If i had to guess the use of a steel needle or a properly sized stylus on 78 RPM records will inrease the dymanic range of a 78 RPM record by 10-15% I believe the greater the the diffrence between the noise theashold and peak Db results in a better sounding record. this is done with the unaltered recording before processing. record noise at an average 79 Db with a steel needle and maximum peak at 10 Dd record noise at an average 62 Db with a 3.5 mil sylus and maximum peak at 10 Dd After reading a few articles on dymanic range all my videos from now on will have a maximum peak Db of 10 with no compression unless directed to preserve the original recordings. I have found many reissies of classic twenties recording that have fallen victim to the "loudness wars" andf i was part of it up until now.
